I am rather disappointed with this product. I encourage people to read the product reviews and look at the product description better than I did.I have two main issues with this item:#1- The “metal” is poor quality. The product description and package claims it is constructed of “carbon steel”… more like cheap aluminum which will bend under use. The handle is likewise poorly attached to shovel. This item will NOT function well as a shovel in anything other than sand or snow or loose dirt.#2- The item size is NOT standard “entrenching tool” size. The “shovel” claims to be equivalent to a military entrenching tool. It is NOT! See photo comparison below. I am at fault as much as the manufacturer as they did clearly list the overall dimension of 18.25″. So this is partially my bad for failing to notice this.Lastly this is just a poorly made product which will function as a shovel, but only under specific circumstances. Perhaps it is intended for the backpacking community. But it fails as an emergency shovel or entrenching tool!Pictured below is the SOG shovel set next to a regular size “entrenching tool” shovel.

I hate all the negative reviews for this item. I was in The Corps, so yes I know what an e-tool is. If you buy this expecting to take it into the battlefield and use it as a weapon, dig a fox-hole with it, and use it as back-up body armor then yes you will be disappointed. Could you use this items for those purposes? Yes – except for the body armor option …and it would take you a wee bit longer to dig that fox-hole because it’s half the size of a government issued e-tool. However, for civilization purposes this product is great. It’s small, lightweight, and does what it’s intended for. Although I’d remove the pick-axe section of the product and use stainless steel washers to take up the extra space that pick-axe had been occupying – that’s just me though. I’ve never needed a pick-axe out in the bush… I barely have a need for a shovel… although when I do need it for one of those off-grid and extremely unlevel camp spots I’m glad I have it. Plus I sharpened the flat edge of the shovel to be a lightweight axe for bushwhacking.

I don’t know why people are 1 staring this product. The quality is there for the price. If you are looking to dig a real trench, foxhole, what have you, get a real shovel. I think what this is intended for, latrine hole, leveling a sleep spot for a tent, clearing a spot for a fire that sort of thing, it works well. I think it is durable enough to take a beating instead of using my hands which is why I own it. I think there is a lot to like about the tool. It’s compact size and all metal features and general handiness make it a good choice for someone like me who Isn’t so picky to one star it for it’s lack of grade 8 bolts. I won’t be swinging this thing into the ground like I am splitting wood. I know it’s small in size and will take time to make a large hole but, this is for small holes or for clearing the surface to make level. Sure, it could be a little nicer with some higher grade bolts but, that’s the way things are made these days. I hope it lasts but, I am using this as an emergency tool and have made peace with it’s limitations. Save your hands.
